Subterranean Homesick Cues

What?: We all know that Bob Dylan’s iconic video for ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ is one of brilliance. But who’d have thought it would get a second wind 42 years after it was shot?

To promote the release of his self-titled greatest hit album (Dylan), Ten4 Design has come up with this pretty special attraction. You can literally get inside the video and send a message to your friends. The magical part is how your message replaces Dylan’s original lyrics. Whether it be a bit of banter, or just plain silliness, you can say whatever you want, and Dylan will keep turning those cards.

So what?: On one hand, a relatively simple viral campaign; text message your friends via Bob and his placards. On the other hand, it raises questions about the nature of embeddable product placement. Companies such as MirriAd, are already toying with the placement of content into pre-recorded productions. How long before someone tags their product in an old music video. Who will be the first artist (alive or deceased) to find themselves clutching a can of Coke?

The big budget video has died off with the rise of YouTube, but they can now potentially all be resurrected as ad campaigns. Plus it can also put new artists in old familiar ads. Retro product placement is coming. Recycle – the possibilities are endless.
