EMI is still an extremely profitable business and its strategy to focus on less (a lot less)artists and spend more focussed time with them will pay dividends. EMI had something like 14,000 artists on their books, although this is admirable from a purist’s point of view it just doesn’t simply add up in terms of being profiting from each of these ‘investments’, the general public would have trouble naming 30 artists. This may be seen as a vanity purchase by Guy Hands, but Terra Firma will undoubtedly make money from this buyout.

I completely agree with Giles. I’m so bored of beer brands throwing money at acts or existing online stuff.

I’ve been working on a music thing with a pretty big beer brand for the past 5 years and it’s a struggle to see past the “blow a load of money on one big event” ideas. It’s an even bigger struggle to get them to realise what they could do with all that content they could be creating from those events and how it could be used locally as well as globally.

Its a great concept! My band The Pali Gap were chosen by Red Stripe Beer in the UK for their promotion 2007 which included free downloads of our music. Great marketing for music and beer!! www.myspace.com/thepaligap

It truly is a sorry state. Red Stripe are in on the act too:
http://tinyurl.com/2e8qza
I can’t help but feel that the choice of music is a wee bit white and middle class for a Jamaican beer. And yet another battle of the bands. The mind truly boggles…
